Hi. I'm not really good with writing STUFF about me. I usually just end up rambling and saying insignificant stuff. Just like what I'm doing right now, explaining this to you. But anyway, I'm just a simple girl, living in this bizarre place called MANILA. I've been living my life since the year 1994. I've been blogging my heart away for about three years now, and I'm loving it, so far. I am now currently a college student in De La Salle University taking up International Studies major in European studies. You should know that my blog isn't the best one here, but I do hope that this blog would make you smile and make you know more about my life at least once in a while.

DepEd “Drops” Science? What Science? →

A recent report by the Manila Bulletin said that the Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) will be dropping science classes for public schools from the first and second grades. This was supposedly “in line with its efforts to decongest the Basic Education Curriculum and to make learning more enjoyable to young learners.” DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro says, however, that they will be integrating science topics “in other subjects to make the new curriculum more child-friendly.” This new curriculum will “mainly focus on oral fluency” for the first grade.

Neil Degrasse Tyson once said, “If you’re scientifically literate, the world looks very different to you.” Beyond its practical utility, science provides an outlook that imbues the world around us with unending wonder, which will always be unavailable to those lacking the curiosity to investigate things deeper than face value. Science empowers one against the cognitive failures our brain is predisposed to (we call these “biases”). Scientific illiteracy is a sure way to getting swindled by liars, frauds, and superstitions but, more than that, scientific illiteracy makes an entire universe inaccessible.

DepEd needs to get its priorities straight. It’s also really sad that it thinks that science and “enjoyable learning” are mutually exclusive. Instead of taking science out, it should encourage teachers to make children love science before they get to its more technical aspects. (It’s not about how difficult it is, it’s how much it’s appreciated. I wouldn’t have given as much of a damn about my previous science subjects if I didn’t find them remotely interesting due to all those documentaries I watched with my dad in grade school. It’s about starting young.)
